Long line fishing has a HUGE impact on a large variety of species, pushing some toward the slippery slope of extinction. Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles, Albatross, many Shark species, Sea Birds of all kinds, are all far too often victims, as these are tempted to take the bait on these long lines, or get tangled up in it while doing so.
Up to 25% of long line catches are thrown back (mostly dead) as waste into the sea. Long lines are called, ‘the Curtain of Death’.
The U.S. has banned long lines from near the west coast, but much more needs to be done. Protection of those species vulnerable to the trap of long lines around the world (length of line varies from 1 mile to 100 miles long) is required ASAP. To stop this unacceptable ocean waste a world- wide ban is desperately needed.
