HUMBOLDT PENGUIN

The Humboldt Penguin population is variously estimated between 2,500-10,000, this unique species is very much threatened by human disturbance and local over fishing.

Human presence proves extremely stressful and when humans are in the penguin’s vicinity its heart rate increases exponentially, perhaps dangerously so.

This penguin seems to virtually ‘fly’ through the water below the surface and returns to its usual breeding site each season.

It lives on the rocky west coast and islands of South America
